Named Ranges in Excel: See All Defined Names (Incl. Hidden Names)

Excel has a useful feature: Named Ranges. You can name single cells or ranges of cells in Excel. Instead of just using the cell link, e.g. =A1, you can refer to the cell (or range of cell) by using the name (e.g. =TaxRate). Excel also provides the “Name Manager” which gives you a list of defined names in your current workbook. The problem: It doesn’t show all names. Why that is a problem and how you can solve it is summarized in this article.

Why not showing all names is a problem

The problem with not showing all defined names is that you can’t delete them. Because they are hidden. Let’s talk a little bit about defined names in Excel.
  • Defined names are copied with each worksheet. So if your workbook has with thousands of names, they will be copied to a new workbook if you copy one worksheet.
  • Even if you delete the worksheet you copied, the defined names stay. That means, the name just keep accumulating.
  • Besides that the names enlarge the workbook, you might run into trouble when duplicating worksheets. In worst case, you have to confirm the following dialogue box for each name separately.

Solution 2: Use a VBA macro to see all named ranges

Our next method to edit hidden names in Excel is via VBA macros. We have prepared two VBA macros. Please insert a new VBA module and paste the following codes. If you need assistance concerning macros, please refer to this article.

VBA macros to make all names visible

This first VBA macros makes all defined names visible. You can then edit them within the built-in Name Manager (go to Formulas–>Name Manager). After pasting this code snipped into the new module, place the cursor within the code and click on the play button on the top of the VBA editor (or press F5 on the keyboard).
If you want to hide all names in your current workbook, replace tempName.Visible = True by tempName.Visible = False.

VBA macro to remove all names

The following VBA macros deletes all names in your workbook.
One word of caution: Print ranges and database ranges are also stored as defined names. Before you delete all names, make sure that you really don’t need them any longer.

Windows 10 High CPU Usage Fixes

Windows 10 is supposed to run flawlessly on the same hardware as Windows 7 and 8.1, but for various reasons, it fails to do so, and in some cases, it actually leads to performance problems that make it completely unusable.
This is the case of an error that appears to lead to very high CPU usage in Windows 10, and according to reports by users who have come across this problem, Microsoft is yet to provide a fully working fix until now.
So your best shot is to try workarounds provided by the Windows community and other users who have experienced the same problem before eventually finding a way to address them.
How to fix the high CPU usage
Method 1
Launch the Registry Editor by typing regedit.exe in the Start menu and navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TimeBroker
Look for the Start entry and change its value from dword:00000003 to dword:00000004 (simply replace the 3 at the end of the value with 4).
Changing this value could have an impact on Cortana’s performance, but it appears to be closely connected to the high CPU usage in Windows 10. In case you’re not using Cortana at all, you’re on the good side. Otherwise, setting reminders won’t work.
Method 2
Launch settings and go to Update > Advanced. Here, you must disable P2P sharing, as it’s believed that, in some cases, your CPU usage could skyrocket because this process runs in the background.
Simply click the “choose how updates are delivered” option and toggle “updates from more than one place” to off.
Method 3
Additionally, it appears that, in some cases, the notification system is at fault for the high CPU usage, and some users recommend disabling the Windows 10 tips from the very beginning to avoid this.
To do this, go to Settings > System > Notifications & Actions and simply uncheck the box that says “Show me tips about Windows.” If you’re already familiar with Windows 10, you should have no problem at all.
Method 4
If your Windows 10 version already has support for Windows Spotlight, there are some recommendations to disable it. Once again, background services are believed to be at fault for what’s happening with the CPU, so the high usage could be the result of the services running in the background.
To do this, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and change Windows Spotlight to Picture.
Other methods
There are several other recommendations in this Microsoft Community thread, including the removal of some apps such as OneDrive, Google Drive, external drives, and Groove Music. You can also try disable background apps, as one of these processes might not be optimized for running on Windows 10.
Last but not least, you can try a full Windows 10 refresh, which will reinstall the OS, but without removing your files, settings, and apps. This should work eventually, but it obviously takes more time.

Hack into a protected Excel 2007 Sheet

When Microsoft introduced Excel 2007, they introduced new file types - we all know them by now: xlsx, xlsm, xltx, etc. These file types are often referred to as Open XML. That's because the new file types are essentially packages that contain XML files. If you take an xlsx file and change the extension to zip, you'll be able to see all the xml documents that make up your Excel file.
The new Open XML file types come with lots of benefits. One of the major benefits is that you can change the content and properties of an Excel 2007 file simply by manipulating the XML documents that make it up.
Well, while playing with the Open XML files, I discovered that you can remove spreadsheet protection simply by applying a simple edit to the xml within the Excel file.

Say I have a workbook where Sheet1 is password protected. So I think to myself, "the nerve of some people - trying to keep me out of their spreadsheet".
I decide that I want to unprotect this sheet, but I don't know the password. Because this is Excel 2007, I'll hack into the xml and remove the spreadsheet protection.
Step 1: Make a backup of your file in case you really monkey it up.
Step 2: Change the file extension to zip.
Step 3: Extract the contents of the zip file.
Step 4: Go to the extracted files and navigate to the xml for the target sheet (found in the 'xl\worksheets' directory)
Step 5: Open the target sheet's xml document using an XML editor (I use a free editor called XML Marker)
Step 6: Find the 'sheetProtection' tag and remove the entire line.
Step 7: Save the edited xml document and replace the old xml document found in the original zip file.
Step 8: Change the extension back to xlsx.
Step 9: Enjoy your unprotected sheet.
That's right folks; simply removing the sheetProtection element from the xml part negates all protections placed on that sheet. Amazing, right?
